Night Eating Syndrome (NES)

What is NES?

NES is a condition that is characterised by night time awakening(s) accompanies by a compulsive drive to eat that is only relieved by eating before sleep is resumed. Usually the affected person will feel that their eating is out of control and unstoppable, whether or not it is a binge. As a result, the sufferer will feel a tremendous amount of guilt and shame the next morning about eating at night. For the affected person this behaviour is typically every night. The behaviour is accompanies by a tremendous amount of guilt, shame and secrecy, as the person is often embarrassed about their behaviour and the fact that they feel unable to stop it.

I suffered from this condition for almost a decade and like many other NES sufferes out there, I was sad frustrated and disappointed that no doctor, psychologist, sleep specialist or counsellor medical or otherwise could help me solve this mystery condition. Yes, there is almost no help out there for NES suffers apart from a couple of online forums whose proponents offer locks as the coping mechanism to resolve the behaviour. Unfortunately, using locks is only a band aid. It does not rewire the brain to stop you from engaging in the behaviour, unless your underlying physiology is in homeostasis. That’s right. NES is more than just a willpower problem. There are physiological mechanisms at work that are causing a person to night eat. These are to do with hormonal balance, blood sugar, circadian rhythms and more.

I believe knowledge is power. That is why I have designed a course that teaches people about the underlying mechanisms that are involved in NES, and equips them with the tools and strategies to overcome this insufferable syndrome.

If you are ready to learn how to overcome your NES for good and without the need for locks, join one of my group coaching online courses starting September, while there is still space available.

I also offer 1-to-1 coaching. To sign up to either of these, please contact me at [email protected] or click contact me .

Client Testimonials

“I no longer get up in the middle of the night in a complete daze eating whatever I could find. I’ve been sticking to my healthy eating regime and have lost 10 lb.

And I'm sleeping so much better. My cravings have greatly reduced, and I’ve not night eaten for a week now when I used to do it ever night. Now I am much more motivated to stick to pursue my fitness goals.” – Robin

"Thank you so much Arleen Triolo and everyone in this group. The picture below is my calendar for this month. I put a sticker on each day that I successfully avoid night eating. I've made it every day this month so far! Credit goes to my daughter for the snazzy stickers. Here is a little feedback and I'm okay with you using my name. I have had NES on and off since high school (I'm 35). It was always worse during times of stress and for the past 10 years I cannot recall a time when I wasn't struggling with night eating. Years of waking up feeling shame and guilt and just completely out of control. This course helped me to stop night eating, stop night anxiety, sleep better and wake up earlier. I feel free of the morning shame and guilt and I start each day a little better than the last. I would definitely recommend this to others struggling with night eating. I honestly had my doubts, but I'm so glad I was wrong. " – Jessica

“I haven’t had a night of eating in the last two weeks. I now eat very healthy and balanced during the day and am able to stick to my eating plan.” – Tabby
