NIGHT EATING SYNDROME (NES) - HOW TO OVERCOME IT

NES is not a very well-known eating disorder characterised by night-time awakenings (usually between 1 – 3am) coupled with an overwhelming compulsion to consume large amounts of food in order to get back to sleep. The NES sufferer feels that they HAVE TO consume food in order to sleep and often will not be able to fall back asleep unless they consume food, often in large amounts.

In addition, some but not all NES sufferers, also have a compulsion to consume most of their daily calories after dinner, before going to bed.

It’s not a very well-known disorder as it only affect about 1% of the population, and figures are likely inaccurate because many people who have it probably don’t even know that it’s a “disorder”.  In fact, on the Ellen Show, Taylor Swift described engaging in behaviour that sounded very much like NES. But I’m not sure if she even knew it was a “thing”…

Given there is so little information out there about NES, and given that most NES suffers spend many years and $$$ going from one health care professional to another, without being truly helped, I am here to raise awareness as well as help people who suffer overcome NES for good, as I have done!

For the person affected, it’s a devastating experience, because the episodes of night eating completely out of control. In this way, it is similar to binge eating disorder which is also characterised by out of control eating, but during the daytime. Very few medical professionals have heard of Night Eating Syndrome, therefore leaving many people suffering alone and in silence. I was one of those people, struggling with NES for almost a decade.

There have been an increasing number of forums and blog posts on the topic, but none really offering any real value or help in overcoming it. I remember reading a book on the topic about 8 years ago, which was utterly hopeless, basically saying that it’s almost impossible to overcome this disorder and that you’re bound to for obesity if you continue!!! But I am here to tell you that that is not true! It is possible to overcome it, I have and so have others that I have helped (see testimonials of people I helped below).

If you are struggling with this or know someone who is, please don’t suffer in silence. It is possible to overcome NES, why not start your recovery today by simply reaching out today and scheduling a free consultation with me.

I am also hosting group classes starting in July and August. The sign up is open now. If you're interested in finding out more - simply send me an email at: [email protected] .

"Thank you so much Arleen Triolo and everyone in this group. The picture below is my calendar for this month. I put a sticker on each day that I successfully avoid night eating. I've made it every day this month so far! Credit goes to my daughter for the snazzy stickers. Here is a little feedback and I'm okay with you using my name. I have had NES on and off since high school (I'm 35). It was always worse during times of stress and for the past 10 years I cannot recall a time when I wasn't struggling with night eating. Years of waking up feeling shame and guilt and just completely out of control. This course helped me to stop night eating, stop night anxiety, sleep better and wake up earlier. I feel free of the morning shame and guilt and I start each day a little better than the last. I would definitely recommend this to others struggling with night eating. I honestly had my doubts, but I'm so glad I was wrong. " – Jessica

I no longer get up in the middle of the night in a complete daze eating whatever I could find. I’ve been sticking to my healthy eating regime and I am sleeping so much better. My cravings have greatly reduced, and I’ve not night eaten for a week now when I used to do it ever night. Now I am much more motivated to stick to pursue my fitness goals.” – RB

“ I haven’t had a night of eating in the last two weeks. I now eat very healthy and balanced during the day and am able to stick to my eating plan.” – Tabby

About the group course - "We zoomed every 2 weeks and I was so helped by these sessions and I have not eaten at night in almost 3 weeks and I have suffering for years on and off. Arleen was an invaluable leader on this, and I think the other in the group had positives and it was well done not too much and great with intimate group support and education. and I've list 7 lbs already .. thanks Arleen Triolo" - Robin
